Palette of Urban Green

,

Chinese-Australian artist HY William Chan has been commissioned by the government to design the ‘zero-waste’ art installation Palette of Urban Green for Vivid Sydney 2012, the largest celebration of light, music and ideas in the Southern Hemisphere. The interactive light sculptures explore the issue of sustainable urbanization in cities around the world.

Vivid Sydney

Vivid Sydney is the largest festival of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, shining a spotlight on the creative industries and celebrating the ideas hub of the Asia Pacific. It is world-class program where the best, brightest and most innovative talent in the creative industries around the world comes and plays with light, music and ideas.

Following an international competition, William will join the world’s top creatives and at 22 years of age, he is one the youngest designers ever selected. Other creative artists and entrepreneurs involved in this year’s program include Florence + the Machine, Sufjan Stevens and the Etsy and Threadless founders.

Over 500,000 local and international visitors are expected to attend and experience Palette of Urban Green, opposite the Sydney Opera House from 25 May to 11 June, 2012.

About the Project

With the global population surging to seven billion, cities around the world are already experiencing the effects of climate change, population density and energy consumption. The need to address sustainable urbanisation is as urgent as ever.

Palette of Urban Greenis a juxtaposition that encourages us to explore this relationship between the natural and built environment – one that is delicate yet rapidly changing because of urbanisation.

A sensual urban forest is produced using environmentally sustainable timber pallets and creating high-rise architectural towers that physically twist and visually mesmerise. Environmentally-friendly LEDs glow from the sculptures respond to visitors’ movement to create a magnificent array of light and shadow. From the upcycled building materials to the re-use of the sustainable technology following deconstruction, Palette of Urban Green is socially and environmentally sustainable.

This One Young World Ambassador Project is officially endorsed by the Australian Institute of Architects and the Green Building Council of Australia.
