Dr. Das was born in Sylhet, which was part of East Pakistan and is now in Bangladesh. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from Jadavpur University, Calcutta, India, in 1965 and 1968, respectively, and his Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in Electrical Engineering from Washington University, St. Louis, in 1973.
He has authored and/or co-authored nearly 25 papers on Computer and Communications in different journals, magazines, and conference proceedings. He is a frequent speaker at industry forums and has been invited to speak at major technical and non-technical functions and conferences, including the Carnegie Council on ethics and International Affairs, where he presented a speech entitled "Does Culture Affect the Mastery of High-Technology?" and the University of Illinois's School of Engineering at Champaign, Illinois, where he spoke on "Entrepreneurial Careers in High Technology."
Dr. Das has also received the "Alumni Achievement Award" from Washington University School of Engineering & Applied Science. This award recognized Dr. Das's contributions to the advancement of the telecommunications and data communications industry, his entrepreneurial spirit, and his commitment to help others.
Dr. Das is active in financially supporting as well as fund-raising for a number of non-profit organizations. He and his family have founded two Foundations – one in India, and one in the USA - to support various causes.
