Only weeks after the summit in London a devastating earthquake occurred off the coast of the Maule Region of Chile. The earthquake rated a magnitude of 8.8 on the Richter Scale and lasted for a terrifying 90 seconds. Its impact was felt across six Chilean regions and touched the lives of nearly 80% of the population. The earthquake also triggered a Tsunami which devastated several coastal towns and this combined event impacted millions of people and has left thousands of Chilean families without food, clothing, or even a home. President Michelle Bachelet declared a 'state of catastrophe' and sent military troops to take control of the most affected areas. The latest death toll is over 520 and the number of people whose lives have been decimated extends to 100,000's. A non governmental youth organisation called 'Un Techo para Chile' (A Roof for Chile) is working hard to begin the work of rebuilding Chile and to give hope to all those who suffered in this tragedy. Under the slogan "The Earth Shook. Move Yourself Now" they call out to all those who wish to collaborate and to make a donation. The first step consists of collecting funds in order to buy as much emergency housing (small one story homes built from wood) as possible for Chilean families. The second step will involve the reconstruction of the disaster zones by teams of volunteers and professional services.
