The Global Somali Youth Agenda in association with Khayraat Development Association (KDA) launched The Sool Emergency Response Appeal, to mobilise resources, galvanise non-state actors and generate media buzz around the needs of those affected by drought in the Sool Region,Somaliland.

The Appeal aims to:

1.) Mobilise resources to meet the immediate needs of the Drought Affected People in Sool Region.
2.) Galvanising the Non-State Actors to contribute to the Appeal, as well as advocating for local, national and international humanitarian assistance.
3.) Generating media buzz.

Background: 

The region of Sool is in an state of emergency and will likely fall in catastrophe in the next few months. According to the FSNAU the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance is likely to increase due to the unfavourable prospects for the Gu season, with the most affected area beingSool-Sanaag region. Where the Government estimates the drought affected about 40% , which is equivalent to 1.4 million people. 

The humanitarian gaps: As part of their coping strategy the poor and destitute pastoralists are making their way to urban settlements—without an infrastructure adequately prepared to meet the rising need. Recent influxes of destitute poor pastoralist households struggle to cope with the lack of food, water, shelters and basic non-food item (NFI) necessities. Poor hygiene practices, an extreme lack of latrines, and insufficient number of protected water sources compound the problem and dramatically increase the risk of disease for host populations and arriving IDPs.
