Caucus: a group or meeting organised to further a special interest or cause
One Young World is a unique forum in that the agenda is set by the Delegates. The topics of the Plenary Sessions were decided by One Young World Ambassadors and findings from the Ambassador survey were used to determine what the Sessions would be focused on.
The Caucus took the ideal of Ambassador-driven content a step further, bringing One Young World Ambassadors together to discuss what actions the Transparency Plenary Session would ask Delegates to carry out in order to uphold the principles raised at the Summit.
Addressing the attending Ambassadors was Co-Founder Kate Robertson who chaired the discussion along with Iain Willis, Director of Research at Alaco, and Robert Barrington, Director of External Affairs at Transparency International UK.
The knowledge of the guest speakers enabled the Ambassadors to gain a truly global perspective of the issues surrounding corruption and lack of transparency. Every year $1 trillion are paid in bribes and the effects of corruption hit the poorest people the hardest: for every $100 paid into the healthcare system in Chad, only $1 appears in the form of a front line service: the rest is siphoned off by corrupt individuals.
Motivated by the severity of the problem at hand, the Ambassadors worked in small groups to come up with ideas for the One Young World Pledge for the Transparency Plenary Session. Issues of education, regulation and consumer perception were all rigorously debated and a final group discussion showed how passionately Ambassadors feel about the benefits of transparency for business and government.
In the Ambassadors’ handouts, the views of the global Ambassador community were represented with information and opinions sent in from all corners of the globe. As well as UK-based Ambassadors, the Caucus brought together Ambassadors from Iraq, India, Brazil, Turkey and China, amongst other nations and really reflected the international nature of the Summit itself.
A final Pledge was reached after intense analysis of the issues and this Pledge will be announced on September 1st.
