Carolina Fernandes Lemos Bonin Germany Augustine K Kou Liberia Carolina was responsible for creating the first LGBT network group in Location & Commerce at Nokia Berlin. The network helps to promote inclusive leadership within Nokia by raising awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights in the workplace. Augustine is the founder of Gems Kids Foundation, a charity that looks to address the educational and social needs of children in Liberia. The foundation has directly impacted the lives of more than 1,200 children. Carolina’s work, along with the coordinated efforts of colleagues around the world, helped Nokia receive a 100% rating in the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index (CEI) 2013. The CEI is the main benchmarking tool in the USA for corporate policies and practices related to LGBT employees. The 2013 rating is a significant boost from the 2012 Index, when Nokia received a score of 70%. 12 The foundation’s activities include a reproductive health forum that hosts workshops on preventing and treating sexually transmitted diseases and the Back to School Project that provides school supplies to children ahead of each academic year. Augustine also works with the adult population; in 2011 he established Save My Job In The Rain, an initiative that provides waterproof clothing to the street car washers of Monrovia. This simple support enables the car washers to keep working throughout Liberia’s long rainy season and retain their only source of income.
