We talked to One Young World Ambassadors across the globe and asked them what their plans are for leading change in 2017. Have a look at what our Ambassador community is working on and share your goals with us @OneYoungWorld.
Amir Ashour, Iraq
2017 will be an exciting year for me and IraQueer. We want to produce more knowledge to the LGBT+ community in the Iraq/Kurdistan region. We want to fill the gap and empower the community by providing resources talking about issues related to sexuality and gender identity that are not available in local languages. We will continue our international advocacy efforts, and we will keep pushing the limits of what the norms and outdated systems expect us to meet. IraQueer is becoming a stronger organisation, and in 2017 we will translate that strength in a clearer and more tangible way.
Arizza Nocum, Philippines
In 2017, I will make KRIS Library a household name for young people in the Philippines - and eventually in Southeast Asia. Our team will strengthen the reach of our peace libraries, provide scholarships for children in conflict and poverty, and gather support for countering violent extremism in the country and the region. I will do my best to make young people we touch understand that they are important components of the path to peace and progress.
PJ Cole, Sierra Leone
We continue to hold strongly that investing in young people is the best way to securing the future. In 2017 we aim to have a computer training centre available to 19 schools in our community with a capacity to serve 3200 pupils a week. We are working with a midwife and researcher from Kings College London to critically look into the issue of maternal health in Sierra Leone, the most dangerous place for women to give birth, and work to change the narrative. This year we will work with another 125 farmers to help them improve the quality and quantity of their yields and also provide vocational training for 250 young people which includes a target of recruiting 50% women on our training program which is typically male-dominated.
Lina Khalifeh, Jordan
We will be training more than 200 trainers and expand SheFighter to at least two more countries in 2017. We will be delivering presentations and workshops worldwide to spread our message about the importance of Self-Defense for women.
Charlie Oliver, UK
I will lead change in 2017 by taking my experience of running and developing the OYWLondon community and sharing it with the new CAs across seven regions in Europe, from Ireland to Mongolia. We will work together to make One Young World impossible to ignore, strengthening our Ambassador network, and grow awareness by maximising the impact of our work as one.
Alicia Raimundo, Canada
In 2017, I will lead the change by building mental health services that support young people where and when they need it. I will also celebrate Canada's 150 birthday as a community 150 leader.
Marc Alain Boucicault, Haiti
I spent 2016 solidifying the basis of ELAN HAITI. It is now time to use the tool to power actions that will transform the way youth commitment is being leveraged in the world's first black republic. At the last One Young World Summit in Ottawa, I networked with many Ambassadors working in business incubation, youth entrepreneurship and innovation so my 2017 will be fully dedicated to using these international resources and others to create a connected entrepreneurship ecosystem in Haiti that is capable of supporting young leaders from our international network.
Aminka Belvitt, Jamaica
In 2017 ForUsgirls will continue to empower and mentor young marginalised girls in Canada. We will expand our programs and events to more schools in Montreal and cities across Canada. We will establish our scholarship fund to assist our program graduates with financial assistance towards their post-secondary education, launch our international pen-pal and #OneForAll school supplies fund program with girls in Cameroon, Jamaica, Tanzania, Mozambique and elsewhere. 2017, will the be the year we take our local initiative global!
Guled Ibrahim, Somalia
One Young World has inspired me to not just be the change I want to see in the world, but to lead it. In 2017, I hope to combine my legal education and Rotary Peace Fellowship to get involve with peace and conflict resolution efforts in Africa and become a mediator without a border. Diplomacy, peace-building, and respect for the rule of law are three areas where I want to be involve and lead the change in 2017 as a One Young World Ambassador.
David Gereda, Colombia
In 2017, I want to continue lead the change by building multi-generational networks in Colombia. This year Colombia will start a reconciliation process after more than 50 year of war and I hope to see young leaders at the forefront of this. This year is the most important year for young people in my country because One Young World will be in Bogota.
