What young Colombians think about their country’s peace accord

Last month, voters in Colombia narrowly rejected a landmark peace deal with Farc rebels in a referendum result with 50.2% voting against the agreement and 49.8% voting in favour. Of those Millennials who voted, they voted overwhelmingly for peace.

Colombia's government will sign a new peace accord with Farc rebels today. The accord is aimed at ending over 50 years of armed conflict.

The deal will then be sent to Congress, where the government has a solid majority, with a vote expected to be scheduled for next week.

We spoke to One Young World Ambassadors from Colombia and asked them what they think about the future of their country. Here's what they said:

To be successful a peace process, Colombians have to do our part. We must forgive, and most importantly, we have to give. I do not think we will reach a perfect agreement, but am sure of that we have the best possible deal.

For the peace process to be successful, all the major players (FARC, ELN, victims, politicians, big business representatives) have to be equally understanding and represented in the negotiations. This has to be an agreement for Colombians, but above all else, designed by all Colombians. On the other hand, I think the negotiations and the accord should be exclusively for the achievement of peace. It should not be turned into a piece of propaganda to satisfy political means.

Today is the day to make us feel together and begin to take charge of our future. No more watching as the other commands us. The time for change is now. Our generation are leaders and entrepreneurs, we bring ideas to begin generating change- the future is in our hands.

At One Young World, Prof. Muhammad Yunus invited us to imagine what we wanted our world to be like. Today that speech still gives me hope. Hope that it is possible for a better accord to be agreed and accepted, but it should be an accord that includes the majority of people and that sows the seed of peace which all Colombians should nurture.

Step up anytime you feel things are not being done right. Get more engaged with what is happening in your country and use the political channel to help change things. Use your vote, pressure your congressman. Yes use social media as powerful pressing tool but never forget that the real game changer is the Democratic channel which usually requires more commitment than a few tweets.
