I am passionate about
ActionsI have always been passionate about equal opportunities and people being able
to bring their whole selves to work. Since joining BP at their technology
site in Pangbourne, I observed barriers to colleagues wanting to be
themselves in the workplace. I joined the Diversity & Inclusion team to help
make a change, and quickly became involved in organising events, speaking in
team meetings about our values and behaviours, and ensuring a fair working
environment on site. It became apparent that the LGBT+ community was not
represented, and there were instances where people had reached out to the
greater BP for support. I realised that something had to be done. I spoke to
senior leaders including Peter Duff (Head of D&I, EMEA) and along with a
colleague from the D&I committee, I created a BP Pride group in Pangbourne.
It took a lot of effort to raise awareness and build support, but once
momentum was built, it became a runaway success and there has been great
feedback. We even gained our VP an OUTstanding award for leading the D&I
agenda because of this initiative. I then became chair of the D&I committee,
which enabled me to further promote progressive initiatives to a BP site that
sadly had a lot of outdated attitudes.
Now that I work in a different office, I continue to contribute by being part
of the BP Pride steering committee, and I regularly speak at mentoring events
with schools from the area to provide motivation and incentive to young
people around Canary Wharf.
