For the past few years, I have been involved in advocating tobacco control with youth across Indonesia. Along with Youth Movement for FCTC and Lentera Anak Foundation, I tried to conduct tobacco control advocacy through meaningful youth participation, and seeing the issue from a more comprehensive perspective. Thus on 2015, I co-initiated Youth Movement for FCTC with the help of Lentera Anak Foundation. The movement was intended to support our president to sign Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and enforce any tobacco control measures to protect our young generation from cigarettes. More than promoting smoking as a risky behavior, we meaningfully participate as youth to target stakeholders like government institutions to enforce tobacco control measures (tobacco ads ban, smoke-free zones, increasing cigarette excise tax). We have met with Presidential Staff, Ministers, Mayors, and other local leaders to give them our monitoring results (by Children Forum in 10 cities), petitions (around 40.000), letters (11.023-many of them handwritten), and did countless street rallies. Our network is currently consisted of 60 youths from 45 cities, with each of them representing thousands of youths across Indonesia. I myself has been involved in training these youth advocates, and acted as the movement’s facilitator and Spokesperson to speak in various national media and conferences since 2015. It has been the greatest honor for me to fight Big Tobacco alongside these wonderful youths.
