Being eight years old I joined the local scouts group, where I learned, what it means to enjoy time in the nature, having fun in groups and helping in the local community, e.g. by collecting waste paper almost every single months with the garbage truck for over 3 years. What I didn’t recognize back than was the fact, that the probably biggest thing I have learned there, is how important it is, to be active for a community and how much actually can be changed bottom up.
During my bachelor studies at the University I travelled for one summer to India where I got my first experience in doing social work outside of my home country. For 3 months I was working with the NGO Watershed Organisation Trust four hours east of Mumbai on their projects. By creating safe water access and teaching the farmers on how to use water for sustainable agriculture this NGO has a tremendous impact on the prosperity of the villages they are working with.
After University I decided to start my career in finance, however I didn’t forget about my passion in social projects and initiatives. The most recent project I started in my company in collaboration with Bridges To Prosperity is a good example, that even in a corporate job, you can have a big impact also in social initiatives.
Actions
I created a social initiative at my company to support the NGO Bridges To Prosperity to build footbridges in rural areas around the world. The goal of Bridges to Prosperity is to provide access to healthcare, education and markets by teaching communities how to build footbridges over impassable rivers, in partnership with organizations and professionals.
Our first joint project led us to the Coclé Region of Panama, where we built together with the engineering firm Arup a 47m long footbridge over the Zapillo river.
The footbridge connects now safely the two parts of the Calabase community and secures access to schools and to the fields now full year round.
The project included not only the construction of the bridge, but also the support of Bridges To Prosperities construction teams in various countries by donating full sets of Hilti construction tools and consumables.
The project is a direct outcome of the One Young World meeting in Johannesburg, where I met Lee Franck, and engineer from Luxenbourg, and where we came up with the idea of a joint partnership of our companies together with Bridges to Prosperity.
