Dame Sarah Storey
Britain's most successful and most decorated Paralympian
Dame Sarah Storey is Britain's most successful and most decorated Paralympian. Throughout her athletic career, she has won 17 gold medals, five of which were earned before turning 19. Sarah first began her Paralympic career as a swimmer, competing in four Paralympic games. Nevertheless in 2005, she decided to leave the pool and take up cycling where she established herself as the best para-cyclist in the world. As an extraordinarily well-rounded athlete, Sarah currently holds 12 world titles across both track and road cycling.
Sarah joined Greater Manchester as their second Active Travel Commissioner after three years working in South Yorkshire. She is also a non-executive director at the Department for Transport, helping them understand the way we all travel. As well as being an everyday cyclist, Sarah is a mum of two who walks and cycles with her children regularly. Accessibility has been a key theme of all of her work so far and she wants to make sure that we design all of our infrastructure so that it is inclusive and leaves nobody out. Sarah will be following on from Chris Boardman in Greater Manchester and a key priority will be to refresh the mission
