Delegate FAQs

Attending Manchester 2022

The annual One Young World Summit convenes the brightest young talent from every country and sector, working to accelerate social impact. Delegates from 190+ countries are counselled by influential political, business and humanitarian leaders such as Justin Trudeau, Paul Polman and Meghan Markle, amongst many other global figures.

Delegates participate in four transformative days of speeches, panels, networking and workshops. All Delegates have the opportunity to apply to give keynote speeches, sharing a platform with world leaders with the world’s media in attendance.

The agenda is shaped by the One Young World Community through the Global Consultation Process, ensuring maximum relevance to the issues affecting young people.

As well as listening to keynote speakers, Delegates have the opportunity to challenge, interact and be mentored by world leaders. Delegates make lasting connections throughout the Summit, celebrating their participation at social events and the unforgettable Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

Delegates graduate from the Summit as One Young World Ambassadors, joining a community of 14,000+ young leaders across the globe.

Preparing Delegates for the Summit

We at One Young World (OYW) are counting down the days until the One Young World 2022 Manchester Summit, taking place from 5-8 September!

For young leaders, the Summit is the landmark event of the year. It is a chance for the individuals responsible for shaping the future of our world, to come together to confront the biggest challenges facing humanity. The Summit is the ultimate place to be inspired, share learnings, connect and collaborate to raise the bar for what it is possible to achieve as leaders, individually and collectively.

Every month leading up to the Summit, we will be bringing Delegates together to equip them with the knowledge, advice and informal connections that will enable them to maximise their time in Manchester and beyond.

Content

The Presentation Stage hosts the annual Plenary Sessions which are shaped by the five annual Plenary Challenge topics for the Summit. These topics are curated with support from the One Young World Community of 13,000+ Ambassadors, via the Global Consultation Process (GCP), to determine which topics, issues and key questions are addressed during the Summit each year.

The Plenary Sessions involve One Young World Delegate Speakers, selected through a highly competitive application process to showcase the impact of their projects and initiatives. During these Sessions, young leaders share innovative solutions for the world’s most pressing issues, with introductions from renown global leaders.

Interactive stage sessions span wide-ranging subjects delivered in various formats, from Delegate-led panels to keynote speeches.

During breaks from the Presentation stage, Delegates have the opportunity to network and experience our Partners’ sponsored stands and participate in interactive activities.

These are interactive, practical skills and scenario-based sessions run by Ambassadors, Counsellors and Delegate Partners during breaks from the Presentation stage.

Workshop sessions are relevant to the Summit content and deliver instantly applicable techniques, ideas, and/or processes while being practical, interactive, or scenario based in nature.

Early registration is strongly advised because workshops have maximum room capacities and are done on a first come served basis. Once full you will not be allocated a place. If you register for a session it is mandatory you attend as your lunch is only available here.

One Young World exists in order to allow young leaders to make meaningful connections that will help them to drive positive change long after they attend the Summit.

There will be lots of time allocated for networking but, as the agenda is so packed, it is essential that you make the most of every opportunity. Coordinating Ambassadors will organise region-specific activities so you can meet others in your local city, home nation and neighboring countries.

Action Sessions offer Delegates the chance to meet with other attendees who are working across the same issue areas as they are. With the OYW Summit acting as a convening force for young leaders, these sessions are critical in ensuring those who are experts in their fields link up and collaborate post-Summit.

Action Sessions will take place both in Manchester and digitally and will not require prior registration.

At each Summit, the One Young World team organises exclusive, invitation-only Mentor Sessions with Counsellors. Focused on various topics, these Sessions allow for Delegates who are at the forefront of their respective fields to connect with senior leaders they would never have had the opportunity to meet otherwise.

Delegates are selected on the basis of their One Young World profiles and the relevance of their work. The more complete your One Young World profile is, the more likely you are to be selected for a Mentor Session.

Types of Attendees

Attending a One Young World Summit connects you to a community of over 12,000 young leaders driving positive change globally.

Delegates leave the Summit as One Young World Ambassadors, with the means and motivation to further drive forward positive change within their countries, communities and organisations.

A Delegate is a candidate who has passed the selection process and has been approved to attend the Summit. Delegates either attend with a partner organisation, on a scholarship, or independently by fundraising for their Summit place. This year’s Summit will host over 2,000 Delegates with at least one young leader from every country in the world.

An Ambassador is a young leader who has attended a One Young World Summit as a Delegate. All Delegates become Ambassadors at the Summit’s Closing Ceremony. An Ambassador’s involvement with One Young World continues long after the Summit closes. A dedicated Community Team works all year round to track community impact, organise events, facilitate local networking, spark opportunities for collaboration, and provide growth opportunities through mentorship, funding programmes and media exposure. With the support of the Community Team, Delegates-turned-Ambassadors work on their own initiatives or lend the power of the network to existing projects. Of those in employment, many return to their companies to create change from within, energising their corporate environment. Ambassadors attending this upcoming Summit are referred to as ‘Returning Ambassadors’.

The Community Team cannot do its work alone. Every year, the Team sources applications and selects a committed group of Ambassadors based in different geographical regions to work as Coordinating Ambassadors. This global team of Coordinators lead community engagement across OYW’s 26 geographical regions. This engagement is key to sustaining momentum after each Summit, tracking the impact of individual Ambassadors, organising events, supporting Ambassadors to make their projects more effective and making useful connections between them. A team of Managing Ambassadors representing North America, Latin America, Africa and The Middle East, Asia, Europe, and the Pacific look to support the Coordinators throughout the year. Your regional Coordinating Ambassador will be at the Summit. Find out which region you are represented in, and find out who your Coordinator is. One Young World recruits a new class of Coordinating Ambassadors after each annual Summit.

A Delegate Partner is an organisation or individual who is committed to supporting youth leadership by funding places at the Summit. They nominate their most talented employees, young leaders in their network, or sponsor specially selected Delegates through nominated scholarship programmes.

Observers are anyone who wants to observe the Summit (with some restricted access) but does not fall into either the Delegate category or the Partner Executive category.

Counsellors are global luminaries who are committed to empowering the next generation of young leaders. They lend their global stature to the Summit as well as initiatives run by One Young World Delegates, and counsel Delegates on how to achieve positive change.

Guest speakers are individuals who have been asked to contribute to the Interactive Stages in their capacity as experts in their field or contributors to the Summit programme.

One Young World was founded by Kate Robertson and David Jones – the inaugural Summit was hosted in London in February 2010. Kate Robertson is the CEO of One Young World, David Jones serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees. The Founders play a key part in hosting the Summit each year.

Code of conduct

The One Young World Community spans the whole world as it is made up of people from different cultures, backgrounds, and with different experiences.

It is really important that Delegates and Returning Ambassadors embrace our values of inclusion, pluralism, leadership and empowerment, while upholding the highest personal and professional standards when attending the Summit, and when representing One Young World beyond the Summit.

One Young World receives thousands of applications from Delegates wanting to attend the Summit every year. You have been selected to attend because you are an exceptional leader, but other people weren’t successful on their application. Therefore, it is important that everyone who has the opportunity to attend gets the most out of the Summit, and the One Young World community gets the most out of them.

You should carefully read the ‘Code of Conduct’ so that you are clear about the standards we expect. We have produced the following guide to help you navigate the Summit in the context of the ‘Code of Conduct’.

After the Summit

For those of you who have participated in the Summit for the first time, you will officially become a One Young World Ambassador. Welcome to the OYW family!

What does being a One Young World Ambassador mean?
The ‘Ambassador’ status is a brand. It means you represent young leaders from around the world in your organisation, your community and your country. It is globally recognised and will open many doors for you. Use the brand to amplify your message and add power to your actions. Introduce yourself as a One Young World Ambassador, add it to your CV, your LinkedIn, include it in applications. The more you make use of the title, the more recognised and powerful it will become, and the more you will benefit from it.

The Ambassador Network
As an Ambassador, you are part of a network of 14,000 young leaders in 196 countries. The network can put you in contact with amazing people from every industry, sector and walk of life driving forward positive impact. Don’t forget that every Ambassador is a potential collaborator, mentor or friend, so make use of these connections. Keep the conversation going in the One Young World Ambassador social media groups, and with your local Coordinating Ambassadors.

If you are looking to connect with someone with a specific skill set but don’t know where to look, contact our Community Team at [email protected] who will be happy to link you up with the right people.

Coordinating Ambassadors
We can't do our work alone. We have Coordinating Ambassadors who lead community engagement across our 26 geographical regions. This engagement is key to sustaining momentum after each Summit, tracking the impact of individual Ambassadors and making useful connections between them. We also have Managing Ambassadors overseeing North America, Latin America, Africa and The Middle East, Asia, Europe, and the Pacific - who support the Coordinators throughout the year.

We work hard throughout the year to ensure you have access to a set of exclusive opportunities that will enrich your work and further support your endeavours. The Community Team is always on call; year-round, they focus on connecting Ambassadors with media, designing bespoke programmes, identifying speaking engagements, facilitating events and beyond.

Make sure you keep us posted on your achievements weeks, months and years after you attend the Summit - OYW is a platform which you can always rely on to celebrate your milestones and provide visibility to a wide audience.
