How to Apply for a Scholarship

Your guide to making a successful scholarship application

If you’re considering applying for one of our scholarships, we recommend you read our application guidance below before you write your application. Remember, we often receive thousands of applications, so it’s important your application stands out for the right reasons.

  1. Read the scholarship overview and eligibility requirements carefully. You must ensure that you meet the requirements and your work is aligned with the scholarship topic or your application will not be successful.

  2. The scholarship form will not save your answers until you submit. We recommend that you take note of all application questions and draft your answer in a separate document in case of connectivity issues, or if you do not wish to complete your whole application in one sitting.

You can then copy and paste your answers into the submission form when you are ready to submit.

Having a separate copy of your application saved is also helpful so you can refer back to what you have written should we request any further information.

  3. Read each section carefully and ensure your answers address the specific question in a clear and concise manner.

  4. Make sure you fill out all sections, or your application will not be considered.

  5. Always include tangible impact statistics and evidence to support descriptions of your work wherever possible. For example, “our programmes have provided training for 1,300 young people across Ghana, 90% of whom are now in full-time employment as a result. Here are the testimonials from my website.”

  6. We are also interested in hearing about you and your story. Do include some context about why you are passionate about the issues you are working to solve.

  7. Demonstrate how you believe attending One Young World will help you progress your work and scale your impact. If you are applying to a scholarship run in partnership with a business or organisation (e.g. Deloitte, AstraZeneca etc), it is important to also highlight why you would specifically like to attend as part of these organisations' cohorts. We want to see your passion for the opportunity.

  8. Key things to highlight in your answers are:
    1. What problem are you trying to solve
    2. How specifically are you solving it
    3. What results/impact have you had to-date
    4. the innovation of your work/solutions
    5. your leadership style/values (read OYW Leadership Charter)
    6. your vision for the future and how attending One Young World will help you achieve this

  9. Collate all relevant links to your work. Key links are websites to your organisation, your LinkedIn profile, links to any articles covering your work that may give further insight, and links to any coverage on awards or achievements.

Please double-check that all links are correct and work.

  10. Do not use ChatGPT or AI software to write your answers for you. We can easily tell applications written by people apart from those written by software. We want to hear your voice.

  11. Some scholarships are selected on a rolling basis, so we recommend getting your application in as early as possible.

  12. You can apply for multiple scholarships if you believe your work is relevant to more than one. But please note you can only be selected for one scholarship opportunity, and will be removed from consideration for others if you are selected for one.

  13. One Young World Ambassadors can apply, but please note that priority will be given to first-time Summit attendees (not One Young World Ambassadors). This is because One Young World is committed to ensuring opportunities to attend the Summit are available to as many people as possible, regardless of their background or financial circumstances.

  14. Please note that, due to the high volume of applications we receive, we are unable to give individual feedback on applications.
