Over the past few weeks, you may have heard about a groundbreaking new initiative to protect the Pacific Island nation of Palau, an archipelago of over 200 islands: the Palau Pledge. This past December, Palau became the first nation on earth that requires all visitors to take an oath to protect it - entry visas won’t be issued to those who don’t sign.
Amaal Abukar, a One Young World (OYW) Ambassador from Somalia, was selected as a recipient of the prestigious Rotary Peace Fellowship. Each year, Rotary selects 100 professionals from around the world to train and study at its global peace centres to advance the principles of peacebuilding. As a Peace Fellowship recipient, Amaal seeks to obtain more knowledge and skills to become a leader and catalyst for peace and conflict resolution.

I was born and raised, educated and employed in Yemen’s capital city, Sana’a, where the beauty of our old city buildings keep us looking to tomorrow with hope. However, the current protracted conflict has ravished the hope of our dreams and replaced them with a living nightmare from which we can’t imagine waking up.

Taffan fled the war in Kurdistan as a political refugee during Saddam Hussein’s regime with her mother and sister. Raised in Sweden, she now supports displaced people through the activities of her foundation Taffans Insamlingsstiftelse Till Stöd För Flyktingar (TISFF) and her individual advocacy.
