Turmoil in Venezuela: Ambassadors address their country’s destruction

A One Young World Ambassador has spoken of her grief at losing a family member in the anti-government street protests that have claimed the lives of dozens of young people in Venezuela.

Sofia Dominguez, 21, talked of the “unbearable pain” she felt at the death of her cousin Armando Cañizales, who was just 18 when he died this month as Venezuela’s National Guard broke up demonstrations against President Nicolas Maduro and his government.

This Ambassador could be the next UN Envoy on Youth

One Young World Ambassador of the Week Katerina Gavrielidou has been nominated for the prestigious role of United Nations Envoy on Youth and, if selected, hopes to use the position to work for better opportunities for disadvantaged young people. The young Cypriot says she wishes to help “youth who face discrimination and don’t get the chance they deserve because they are excluded in society”.

The Ambassador behind the global campaign #CaawiWalaal to relieve famine in Somalia

Caawi Walaal means “brother/sister help” in Somali and is the name of a remarkable youth volunteer movement that has delivered more than US$18,000 in aid to victims of the famine currently ravaging large parts of Somalia.

The project is rooted in social media and recognisable by its #CaawiWalaal hashtag but its achievements on the ground are very real, such as the recent provision of vital water trucks over a 30-day period to three camps in the stricken region of Baidoa.
