In a region where LGBT communities face stigmatisation, Kevin Mendez, 28, created BYEC to advocate for LGBT rights, women’s rights and youth empowerment and formed the KCAT coalition of NGOs, which successfully lobbied the Attorney General in Belize to rule that the nation’s constitution violated human rights by criminalising male homosexuality.
