Jamail Umar is a youth leader, MSYP for Dundee City East and the Convenor of the Jobs, Economy and Fair Work Committee. He advocates for social mobility, financial education, youth participation, and youth mental health, with a focus on intersectional support for young people.

Jamail also serves as a Youth Councillor on Dundee Youth Council, where he works closely with local government figures to improve the lives of young people across Dundee. In November 2025, Jamail represented the Scottish Youth Parliament's mental health campaign at the annual Children and Young People's Cabinet Takeover. Jamail gave a speech directly to the Scottish Cabinet Ministers about the need for intersectional training and mental health resources for adults working with young people, highlighting the importance of equipping professionals to support every young person, whatever their background.

Jamail is currently studying for a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting and Finance at the University of Strathclyde. Alongside his studies, he is the founding president of the 93% Club Strathclyde, a society through which he champions equal opportunities for state-educated people at the University of Strathclyde, working to break down barriers and build more opportunity for state-educated people.
