Tabata Amaral de Pontes

Brazilian politician and education activist

Tabata launched her campaign as part of RenovaBR, a movement that is driving a renewal in Brazilian politics. 16 of RenovaBR's 120 candidates won seats in the Legislative Assemblies and National Congress - PDT won 28 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 4 in the Senate. The General Election in Brazil has received global attention due to the controversial far-right Presidential candidate, Jair Bolsonaro.

Tabata is the co-founder of Mapa Educacao, a movement with the mission of bringing education to the center of the Brazilian political debate while engaging hundreds of thousands of Brazilian youth, educators and officials. Based on interviews with over 100 education leaders, they launched the ‘Mapa do Buraco’ manifesto, the first manifesto of its kind which suggested priorities for action and a vision of Brazil’s development based on the provision of a quality education. Within months, she and other education campaigners had persuaded then President Dilma Rousseff to adopt the slogan “Brazil: the Education Country.”
