Dr. AbuSaada is the Founder of EYADA, a social enterprise that increases access to healthcare in Palestine by using AI to connect patients with the most suitable healthcare professionals.
EYADA began in 2023 when Momen, now a medical doctor, was still a medical student. During his medical training, he realised that Palestinians often lack access to the family medicine specialty leading patients to seek many different medical opinions and incur additional treatment costs. EYADA matches patients with appropriate healthcare providers by utilising AI to analyse their symptoms. In the aftermath of the Israel-Gaza War, with the decimation of Palestinian healthcare services, EYADA also created ‘convening points’ for Palestinians to meet with doctors and receive medical care in-person.
The social enterprise operates a physical convening point for people to receive direct outpatient medical services and has provided primary healthcare to 3,500 patients in-person or through its AI-driven platform. This is equivalent to 265.59 disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) averted due to non-communicable disease management. In addition, the project helps train AI models to operate more effectively in the Palestinian context, addressing a key gap, as many commercially available AI systems are trained on datasets that do not adequately represent this region.
Moment attended the 2024 Summit in Montréal, where he spoke on the IKEA Open Home Stage at the Why Intersectionality? Achieving Social Justice in Healthcare Systems panel. He connected with Philip Black, CEO of CSRN, who he put in touch with additional Palestinian nonprofits that were provided pro bono consulting services.
“After One Young World, I received an invite from Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator to participate in advocacy and highlight the problem of healthcare algorithms.”
