Khairunnisa co-founded Green Brunei, a social enterprise that promotes environmental sustainability through education, conservation, and advocacy, with a focus on empowering youth to take the lead in building a greener future.
Green Brunei began in 2012, shortly after Khairunnisa graduated from. Through its initiatives, Green Brunei organises events that raise awareness of sustainable practices such as tree planting and recycling, empower young people to pursue environmental careers and represent Brunei on global sustainability platforms, and support national environmental policies. The organisation brings together a wide range of stakeholders, including schools, government agencies, and corporate partners.
To date, Green Brunei has recycled 33,390 kilogrammes of waste through its recycling drives, which over a lifetime is estimated to have mitigated $6,678,000 in greenhouse gas emission costs. The social enterprise has also involved 130,990 total participants in its educational programmes, including talks, workshops, and awareness-raising activities, estimated to have mitigated 2.31 tonnes of CO2 through behavioural change. These educational programme participants have planted 14,776 trees, mitigating an additional 369.4 tonnes of CO2.
Khairunnisa attended the 2018 Summit in the Hague. The experience inspired her to formally register Green Brunei, expand its impact, and further develop her leadership skills. It also increased her visibility within the community, opening doors to speaking engagements. Today, Green Brunei is one of Brunei’s largest youth-driven environmental movements.
“The One Young World Summit gave me the confidence to pursue my organisation full-time. I remember thinking, ‘If the people around me can do it, so can I.’ That was the moment I registered my business.”
