Global event recap: what you missed in August

Over the past few weeks, One Young World (OYW) Coordinating Ambassadors and partners have brought together young leaders from around the world on digital platforms to debate, exchange and propose solutions to the world’s most pressing issues.

Check out some of the events that have been happening over the past few weeks that you may have missed…

1 August - Brazil Caucus

Organised by the One Young World Ambassador community in Brazil, spearheaded by Suelen Nina, the Coordinating Ambassador for Brazil, the OYW Brazil Caucus 2020 was a digital events series spanning 5 weeks. The topics discussed included Refugee Crisis, Innovation for Sustainability in Agribusiness, Education Challenges, Gender Representation and Responsible Economy. The final event in the series staged an in-depth discussion on pathways to a responsible economy.

7 August - Future of Work Webinar

Hosted by Tolulope Aina, the webinar featured a discussion on the effects of Covid-19 and how the pandemic has upended the lives of many young people across Africa. The panel was made up of four impactful One Young World speakers; Dara Latinwo, Fatima Al-Ansar, Yeyemide Fabamwo, and Feycal Saidou, who talked about what they think the future of work will look like and how young people can be prepared for it.

12 August - Caribbean Coffee and Catch-up

To celebrate International Youth Day 2020, Marc Alain Boucicault hosted a virtual meetup with impactful One Young World Ambassadors from the Caribbean. Participants were able to discuss the work they are doing to create change within their countries and communities.

20 August - Women in Motion

Levern Ramshubby - joined by Peggy-Sue Khumalo (Chief Executive, Standard Bank), Tamaryn Green (South African model and doctor), Simonetta Giuricich (COO, VAT IT) and Mpho Manyisa (Marketing Consultant, Discovery Limited) - hosted a conversation around key issues being faced by women today. The main topics that were discussed were women empowering women; how to encourage female leaders in business, and why society should be united against gender-based violence.

21 Africa - #BlackUnity

The OYW #BlackUnity series was created by the OYW Africa team to be a platform where open, transparent and uncomfortable conversations can be held around racism and racial justice from every part of the world. The second event in the series was a discussion around economic empowerment and entrepreneurship, covering the problems of unemployment, lack of access to funding and the challenges of COVID-19, among other economic injustices facing Africa.

23 August - Japan Mini Salon vol. 17

This event was hosted by Tsuyoshi Domoto, the Coordinating Ambassador for Asia 2. The virtual meet-up featured four OYW Ambassadors - Masaki Kawai, Takuya Shokyu, Kemmaru Suedomi and Kaoru Nagasawa, who spoke about their experiences of ethnic Koreans in Japan and their relatives in the Koreas.

29 August - Shine A Light

The OYW Shine A Light Ambassador series highlights the work of Ambassadors in different countries on a particular Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). In this months session, five Ambassadors - Lisa Rapley (Co-Founder, Yuludaria Karulbo), Millicent Barty (Founder, Millicent Designs), Girish Ananthanarayanan (COO, Peepul), Ayano Sasaki (Founder, MIRACT) and Loraine Grace Lapor (Senior Analyst, Coca-Cola) - showcased the actions they are taking in their communities in relation to SDG 4 Quality Education.
