As a Regional Advocacy Officer, Shakira is responsible for driving innovative youth activism programmes throughout South Africa. She was recently named 2017 Woman of the Year in Healthcare at the Woman of Stature Awards Ceremony in Johannesburg, beating a shortlist of distinguished academics and other medical professionals. Shakira Choonara is currently pursuing her PhD in public health and is passionate about improving health systems in low and middle income country settings. Her research, on the micro-practices of governance in health systems is being undertaken as part of the Resilient and Responsive Health System (RESYST) project. Shakira has recently published a journal article about leadership development in health systems.
