Sylvia Alfred is Senior Manager, Public Affairs at Gilead Sciences. Prior to joining Gilead, she worked across a broad range of areas including,  sexual health, cardiovascular and metabolic disease. One of the longest serving members of Gilead, she has undertaken roles in Clinical Operations, Community and Medical Affairs with a focus on communication and advocacy interventions in HIV.

In her current role, she works closely with patient organisations and charities across the UK and Ireland supporting the needs of people living with HIV. This body of work includes providing education, developing collaborative campaigns and partnerships with organisations inside and outside the HIV sector to ensure the voices of people living with HIV is heard.

Sylvia is passionate about working with marginalised, vulnerable and underrepresented communities to increase access to care and together find strategies to reduce stigma. Much of her work has involved developing campaigns to reach and uncover the needs diaspora groups, sometimes with complex socio economic and social needs and develop meaningful engagement and promote peer support.  

Her commitment to working with and for underrepresented communities also led Sylvia to work inside Gilead and start the UK chapter of Gilead’s (ERG) employee resource group across the affiliate, European HQ and international office of which she is currently the lead.   GLOBE (Gilead Leadership Organisation of Black Employees) is one of a series of ERGs driving inclusion inside the business by embracing diversity.
