About the Roundtables

Over the last decade, the African continent has experienced the highest proportion of violent demonstrations globally, with civil unrest growing by almost ten times. The pandemic has given people a renewed sense of urgency to reflect on global strategies tackling structural vulnerabilities and creating a blueprint to anticipate and address crises collectively. This roundtable will take a deep dive into practical ways to mitigate crises.

Following the roundtables, participants will be invited to:

  • take the African Risk Compass Survey online

  • join the faces of the compass campaign: sharing audio and video testimony (if relevant)

  • join the risk observatory hub: sharing thought leadership on topics relevant to human security and risk (if relevant)

Axle International is looking to host one roundtable within each region of Africa, gathering insights from across the continent. Participants can register for the roundtable most relevant to them: North, East, Southern, West & Central Africa.

What is the African Risk Compass?

The African Risk Compass consists of 4 primary elements:

  • An online survey identifying and evaluating emergent risks and trends across the 55 members states of the African Union

  • A hub for data research, bringing together a diverse range of expertise on topics related to risk-based governance, including from the continent's university systems.

  • An annual report, delving into qualitative and quantitative aspects of risk, its mitigation, and the perceptions of it.

  • A public engagement campaign, raising awareness on the importance of crisis preparedness across Africa.
