Breakout Sessions at the Sandton Convention Centre

On Saturday, the Summit’s final day, delegates broke into smaller groups, for which they have pre-registered, based on special interests. In response to feedback last year, the Breakout Sessions aligned with each Plenary Session topic. These Sessions were developed and led by Ambassadors and delegates who are active in the respective areas in order to foster productive workgroups and lasting connections. The remainder of Saturday’s Breakouts, which will be hosted by Counsellors and other experts, are largely focused on delivering practical advice and useful tools.
Media Freedom with Mail & Guardian
Led by Mail & Guardian and AMH owner, Trevor Ncube, this panel session will examine freedom of speech and the developing media landscape. In preparation, Mail & Guardian has conducted a survey entitled ‘Africa:& what do you want from your journalists?’
Ten Essential Lessons with Doug Richard
The School for Startups founder will lead a session for entrepreneurs based on the questions every business must be able to answer in order to launch and grow.
How to Deliver Social Impact in a Large Corporation with Barclays
Ambassadors and delegates from Barclays will share tangible examples of launching social change programmes from inception to senior leader buy-in. Delegates will be able to get direct feedback on how to make their business plans a reality.
Digital Economy – Friend or Foe?
Ambassadors and delegates from Telefónica will probe the opportunities and challenges presented by a digital economy, and using tangible examples will focus on women and technology, digital entrepreneurship, and the digital divide.
The Essential Skill with Decoded
Digital enlightenment organisation Decoded will lead a working group on how to use the power of technology as a liberating and democratising tool and will demystify computer code.
How to Collaborate with Ron Garan
The NASA astronaut will lead a workshop session on the principles of collaboration, encapsulating best practice examples and potential pitfalls.
HIV and AIDS – Delivering Safety
A workshop exploring the ways in which responsible sexual practices and education can reduce HIV infection, and the role of business in helping deliver successful outcomes.
One Young World Debate chaired by Carole Stone
A panel of delegates will hold a formal debate on a topic to be selected by a vote prior to the Summit.
Breakout Sessions in the City of Johannesburg

The City of Johannesburg and the One Young World Summit 2013 Advisory Board worked with and enlisted the support of numerous local partners and iconic venues to provide a range of interesting, informative and inspirational sessions in the Johannesburg area. Following these sessions, delegates attended community dinners, which provided an opportunity for them to engage with a local community members at venues outside the Sandton Convention Centre.
