Salem Afeworki - United States of America

The 2023 State of Sustainability Report for Los Angeles and Orange County, led by One Young World Ambassador Salem Afeworki and civil engineer Camille Le, is the most comprehensive sustainability assessment in Southern California to date. Developed through the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), it engaged 105 practitioners across sectors to analyse progress, trends, and challenges. Findings show 67% of organisations have integrated sustainability into operations, 58% have dedicated staff, and 63% have formal goals.

The report offers a strategic benchmark and has inspired similar initiatives in Phoenix and beyond. It demonstrates that formal, resourced sustainability efforts lead to stronger outcomes and serves as a catalyst for regional collaboration and evidence-based policy-making in sustainable development. Because of this outstanding report and her ongoing work in sustainability and climate action, Salem was named 40 Under 40 Global leader in the 'Climate Change and Advocacy' category in April 2025.
